Sugar Glass

Sugar glass is fake glass made from melted sugar. It was used a lot in old cowboy movies
in the form of bottles (broken over actor's heads) because, most of the time, the 'glass' turns
brown. I'm not quite sure how to make a bottle mold but you can easily make
a small square of the stuff.

Here are some instructions on how to make a pane of sugar glass.

What You Need

• A pot (preferably glass)
• A baking sheet
• butter
• 1 cup of sugar
What sugar glass SHOULDN'T look like!

My bad example
How To Do It

• Grease up a baking sheet with butter     and put it into the refrigerator to chill.
• Pour 1 cup of sugar into a small pot.     Set the burner on a low setting.
• Stir continually until the sugar melts. It     will seem to take a very long time but     don't leave it unattended!
• Keep stirring until the sugar has melted     completely.
• When it has melted, pour it onto the     cold baking sheet. Try to get the     sheet as level as you can get it.
• Let it cool and harden.

*To clean the pot, fill it with water and boil. This will dissolve the sugar sticking to the sides.*

You should be left with a flat, transparent (possibly brown) square of 'glass'.
I messed up my first attempt because I burnt the sugar. I became impatient and I turned the heat up. My kitchen filled up with thick black smoke and the glass turned out brittle and dark red. So the biggest tip I can give is be patient and never leave a pot of melting sugar unattended.

There is also a pretty good sounding sugar glass recipe here.
